New Stories All Day Long!
TS Update:Remember a couple of months ago when TalkingShopping was disappointed to tell our shoppers there were only recycling programs in Germany and France for old water filters? Well, it's time for an announcement of great news! After seeing success with Brita's Filter For Good campaign, Brita is at it again!
Brita has announced a plan to start recycling their water filters in the new year! Old Brita pitcher water filters will be made into products like toothbrushes, cups, and cutting boards through Preserve, makers of 100% recycled household items. Preserve will be recycling the entire Brita plastic pitcher filter casing. Shoppers can drop off their filters at participating Whole Foods stores (all No. 5 plastics can also be dropped off here!) or you can mail in your filter via snail mail (and your box will be recycled by Preserve as well) to:
Preserve Gimme 5
823 NYS Rte 13
Cortland NY 13045
And if you are interested, you can order yourself a Preserve Toothbrush made with a handle of 100% recycled materials, $2.79.
16 oz. Narrow Mouth Tritan (left), $10.00
Original Story:

It's time to lay off the bottle, people.
In turn, you'll be creating a greener planet and leaving more green in your wallet. TalkingShopping loves win-win shopping!
Brita and Nalgene are teaming up for the Filter For Good campaign, a movement to ween Americans from their plastic water bottle habit. In 2006, according to the campaign's website, 38 billion water bottles were sent to landfills (the equivalent of 912 million gallons of oil!). Yikes! Plus, switching to water filters would save you hundreds of dollars every year (the equivalent of a luxury TS Currently Craving!). Take the pledge today and get a coupon!
Unfortunately, the United States does not
currently have a system to recycle water filters yet, but a recent
article by the New York Times highlights petitions like
TakeBackTheFilter.org which are gaining momentum for change, pointing
out that France and Germany already have systems for recycling Brita
water filters.
Even if it takes more time for the U.S. to catch up with our green European friends, throwing away water filters creates a much smaller ecological footprint than consuming plastic water bottles. Even if you aren't all about going green, think of all the green you'll be saving-- think of how easy it will be to justify buying that new handbag as suggested by TalkingStyle!
Right now, get yourself a special-edition (and pba-free!) Filter For Good water bottle. Your water is still as mobile as you, but more eco-friendly.
